Coach hails tremendous team spirit

GUERNSEY number one Pieter Theron heads a strong Sarnian-dominated CI boys squad competing in the under-18 County Cup in Glasgow this weekend. Five of the seven players are from Guernsey and Theron, their coach and the team manager, said the boys had been training really hard since Christmas.

'We have had a minimum of two training sessions every week in the run-up to the competition and the boys are physically and mentally prepared for the challenge,' said Theron.

'The team spirit is really good and the boys are all playing for each other and not as individuals, which in the isolated world of a tennis player is a unique and special accomplishment in itself,' he added.

'This is a breeding ground for success and maybe the British Davis Cup team can take a leaf out of these boys' book.'
