A GRUELLING tough four days for Guernsey's representative in the experimental Europe team that faced Asia in an international Test series at Winchmore Hill in London ended in defeat, but was an interesting experience for Dave Trebert. That the Asians dominated proceedings from start to finish, allowing Europe to win only three of the 12 sessions, was perhaps not all that surprising, after Europe's officials decided to field a widely representative field across what are sometimes referred to as 'the emerging nations'.

By contrast, Asia employed a win-at-all-costs approach, calling on the winners of the recent Asia Pacific Games, and with stars like 2002 Commonwealth champion Siti Zalina Ahmad, who is only 23, and Safuan Said, a bronze medallist from Manchester in their side, were bound to do well.

The format was something of a surprise, with multi-discipline sessions of mixed pairs, triples and fours, and even one mixed singles session.

Trebert, the Vale Rec Bowling Club president and island player, had his best result when the draw brought him and Jersey's Myrtle de la Haye together in the mixed triples.

They drew that match and won their mixed fours.

All told, Trebert won three of his 12 matches: one with de la Haye and two in partnership with Jersey's Alan Shaw, who finished as the best performer among the European men.
