PIETER ROBINSON lived up to his top billing when he took the boys' open singles title at the Guernsey Junior Open. Held at the Guernsey Tennis Centre, number one seed Robinson beat Gareth Coombes 6-1, 6-2.

The scoreline did not do Coombes justice as he played some super tennis at times, but Robinson proved to be too strong in the end.

'I'm very happy to have won,' said the 15-year-old Grammar School student.

'The other guy played well, but I thought I played well enough to beat him. I looked to hit big serves and to get to the net to hit the volleys. This carried me through.'

Robinson had been in cracking form during the week and he certainly carried this into the final.

In the semi-finals, he had beaten Tom de Garis in straight sets whereas Coombes in his semi had a more testing time against Adam Thoumine.

Coombes took the first set 6-3, but he experienced a shock in the second when he managed to win only one game as Thoumine took it comfortably 6-1.

All square going into the last set, it was tight affair that Coombes managed to win 7-6.

In the under-10s' final that followed the Robinson-Coombes match, Sam Hale got the better of Charlie Denton with score 6-2, 6-2.

It had long rallies throughout and both youngsters played some good tennis.

In the girls' open final, Joanna Dyer took the honours after beating Kiara Green in a closely fought match.

Dyer took the first set 6-2, but in the second, a tie-break was required as both players worked the ball well from side to side.

Dyer eventually came up trumps to win 7-6.

The partnership of Nico Robinson and Oliver Shier proved to be too strong for Ben Inder and Paul Cave in the final of the under-14 boys' doubles.

The Grammar School pairing took the first set 6-1 but in the second, Inder and Cave started to find their feet with good volleying at the net.

But it was not enough as Robinson and Shier came through to win it 7-5.

They individually tasted success as well during the week.

Robinson won the boys' consolation A prize while Shier took home with him the B equivalent.

In the last two finals of the day, Coombes and Tom de Garis beat Pieter Robinson and Thoumine 6-4, 6-2 in the under-18 boys' doubles and in the under-14 mixed doubles, Nico Robinson and Dyer beat Shier and Hearse 6-2, 6-3, 6-4.
