Officials crisis - leagues face chop

NO VOLLEYBALL next season.

NO VOLLEYBALL next season. That is the stark reality facing the sport if volunteers are not found to fill the vital committee positions of chairman and secretary for the new season.

At the recent annual meeting nobody could be found to fill the posts, although the remainder of the committee positions have been.

A subsequent EGM also failed to find volunteers.

Media liaison officer Karen Archenoul yesterday said it was a desperate position.

'Legally, we cannot function without a chairman and secretary and so the long and short of this, is that there will be no volleyball leagues next season.

'We have the remainder of the committee in place ready to roll, but without these two positions, our hands are tied.'

She added: 'People need to start giving something back to their sport.

'A lot of people are only too willing to take and it is the same faces making the same commitments to the sport each year to enable it to keep going. The message is, if you want to carry on playing, we need your help.'

This is not a case of scare-mongering,' insists Archenoul and there is some scope for manoeuvre.

'Certainly for the post of secretary, it could work on a job share type basis, so if there is anybody out there who can't commit to it fully, but would like to give some time, we'd still like to hear from them.'

On a more positive note, a new post of development officer is to be filled by the outgoing chairman, Richard Skipper.

It has been created to develop, implement and evaluate volleyball development programmes to increase the quantity and quality of the sport in Guernsey.

But without any league his new position will be worthless.

A further EGM will be held next Wednesday in the Saumarez Room at Beau Sejour at 7pm, when it is hoped the vacant positions can be filled.

If anyone is interested in either position and requires more information, please contact the committee by e-mail on gvasecretary@hotmail.co.uk.

Guernsey won the junior inter-insular on away soil, beating Jersey 25-12, 25-22.
