HEATHER WATSON dropped just one set in winning the European Tennis Association grade three tournament in Solihull. After cruising into the final with four easy wins in the 48-player under-14s, she came across some tough opposition in the form of Leicestershire's Joanna Horne.

The Guernsey girl lost the first set 5-7 before settling to play her usual aggressive game and sweeping through the next two 6-3, 6-1.

Watson and her partner, Manisha Choudhury, also reached the doubles final but lost 2-6, 4-6.

On her victory, Watson said: 'When the final was over I still couldn't believe I had won it.'

In Solihull, Watson was reunited for the week with her former Guernsey coach, Andrew Fisher.

He was impressed with what he saw.

'Heather's whole approach during this tournament was mature and professional,' he said.

This week the tennis starlet is with the Channel Islands women's team at county week in Poole, Dorset.

She is partnering friend and mentor Jo Robinson as the number-one CI pairing.
