Celebrations dampened
IT WAS with more than a shade of irony that on the day that Bowls Guernsey marked their recent national title achievement with an official celebration function, the British champions were brought to their knees on the Beau Sejour green.
IT WAS with more than a shade of irony that on the day that Bowls Guernsey marked their recent national title achievement with an official celebration function, the British champions were brought to their knees on the Beau Sejour green. Paul Merrien's four had qualified for the British championships as Sandeman Fours winners in 2005.
But a year on and with Paul Wakeham filling in for Mac Timms from the team that had clinched the British title in Clevedon, Somerset, last month, the island champions were hammered 26-8 in the local semi-finals.
Their conquerors were the Matt Le Ber skipped Gary Pitschou, Garry Collins and Len Le Ber who will play the team of Ricky Brehaut, Paul Sargeant, Phil Schofield and Geoff Savident on finals day in a fortnight's time.
It was a mixed day for Alison Merrien, the island's number one woman bowler.
With Ellie Collins she teamed up to topple Brookman Pairs champions Doreen Batiste and Pat Le Cheminant, but in the Woodhard Triples she was left disappointed, as she went down 15-14 to Anne Simon's combination.
