Vale Rec 2, Rangers 2

RANGERS converted four shootout penalties out of four to move into the second round of the Jeremie and hand out more cup misery to unlucky Vale at the Corbet Field. This was one of those games where probably neither side deserved to lose, but Vale, who won through to the Stranger final only to be knocked out by a registration problem, were out of luck again after playing the better football but miss two of their four spot kicks.

In truth, it was not much of a game either side of a bright half-hour immediately after half-time.

Laurence Abbott fired Vale in front after 22min. with a good finish and almost doubled their lead on the stroke of half-time only to see his attempt with the outside of his right-foot flash just wide.

Rangers created next to nothing until scoring two in a minute on the hour mark and nearly grabbing a third.

Ryan Gontier headed them level after keeper Jody Bisson paid for misjudging his attem-pted intervention near the edge of the area and within a minute Mark Isabelle had belted a scorcher high into Bisson's left-hand corner from 30 yards.

Gontier really should have added a quickfire third, but blasted over from six yards and later missed a golden chance with his head.

But Abbott deservedly levelled on 75 min. and after a drab extra-time period Paul Prior, Isabelle, Andy Chamb-erlain and Shane Billien converted pena-lties while Mark Ogier and Abott missed for the home side.
