HEATHER WATSON put the disappointment of last week's British Junior National Championships behind her as she won her first round singles match in the US Junior International Hard Court Championships.

The 16-year-old Guernsey star reached the finals of the singles and the doubles of the nationals but had to endure the heartbreak of losing out in both.

She then flew out to the US on Saturday to take part in this week's ITF event in Manasquan on the New Jersey coast.

And she clearly did not let last week's heartbreak get to her as she eased past Jennifer Kellner in straight sets in the opening round.

Watson, who is the number two seed in the competition, won the first set 6-4 before taking the second 6-1 against her 16-year-old American opponent.

The Sarnian now faces Tristen Dewar, 14, of the US in the next round.

Watson is the only Great Britain player left in the event after Stephanie Cornish and number six seed Victoria Brook were knocked out in the first round.

Watson had defeated Cornish in the quarter-finals of the nationals.

The US Junior International Hard Court Championships is a warm up for the US Junior Open at Flushing Meadow at the end of the month.
