Men's joy - Watson despair

UNRESERVED joy for Guernsey on the hard courts of Aland.

That was the tennis story yesterday as Patrick Ogier and Dom McLuskey defended their men's team tennis gold, but at the All-England Club Watson - too good for the Island Games these days - made an early exit in the girls singles.

Watson will be hoping for another extended run in the doubles after her disappointing first-round loss in just over the hour mark yesterday.

She lost 4-6, 6-1, 4-6 despite winning more points than her Russian opponent - 84 to Solovieva's 77.

The Guernsey girl also served 11 more aces than her opponent but the difference came in the number of unforced errors she made - 31 to 27 - and the loss of the big points.

But her partnership with Poland's Magda Linette offers hope of prolonged involvement at the second week of the All-England Championships.

The AEGON Junior International champions are seeded six and play Russians Leykina and Mareno in the first round.
