SAUMAREZ Park was packed on Saturday as islanders flocked to this year's Donkey Derby.

In fact, so many people visited the annual event that beer had run out by 3.30pm.

Luckily, the Rockmount was able to come to the aid of organisers the Lions Club.

Perfect weather was probably to blame for the apparent thirstiness of visitors, but also ensured the fund-raiser was a success.

As well as the donkey races, crowds were treated to donkey rides, classic cars, a funfair and charity stalls.

'It's doubled our expectations,' said organiser Tony Corbin from the Lions Club.

'We ran out of beer by 3.30pm but supplies arrived from the Rockmount, so thanks to them.'
