HEATHER WATSON has been seeded 11 for the junior girls' singles at the US Open in Flushing Meadow and made a winning start this morning.

The 17-year-old Commonwealth Youth Games champion defeated Russia's Ksenia Kirillova, a dangerous opponent ranked just eight places below Watson in the world rankings at 22, 6-2, 6-7, 6-1.

Watson is one of only three Britons through to the main draw of 64, the others being Stephanie Cornish and Laura Robson.

She now plays either American Courtney Dolehide or Romanian Cristina Dinu.
