ATHLETICS pulled off their biggest victory yet since reforming last night as they beat North on penalties in the quarter-final of the Stranger Cup.

Steve Ogier's side twice came within a minute of winning the tie at Northfield as they found themselves in the lead by a single goal with one minute to go before the end of normal time and again at the end of extra time.

But twice the young home side, who were missing a number of big name players being rested for tomorrow's crucial Division One match with Bels, scored in the dying moments to ensure that the proceedings continued.

However, Athletics held their nerve in the penalty shootout to see them through to the semi-finals.

'I'm delighted for all the boys,' said Ogier.

'They were superb, especially when we got so close to winning twice and then they came back. But we kept going.

'Over the last few months we've had them, they've improved as individuals and as a team. I'm pleased that they've worked hard and that they've got a reward for that.'

One person who Athletics do have to thank is Lee Savident.

The 6ft 5in. former Hampshire cricket professional, who returned to Guernsey this year, also showed that he is a very accomplished goalkeeper, making several stunning saves throughout his debut.
