HEATHER WATSON is through to today's first round of the main draw of the $25,000 Aegon Pro Series Glasgow event.

The 17-year-old Sarnian star defeated Mona Barthel 6-1, 7-6 in yesterday's final qualifying round.

She spoke to her father, Ian, after the victory.

'She said she fully controlled the first set, but she relaxed a little bit too much in the second,' he said.

'But nevertheless she still managed to get the right result.'

Watson has been drawn against Selima Sfar, a 32-year-old Tunisian ranked 307 in the world, in the first round.

She is also in action today in the doubles, partnering Naomi Cavaday.

The left-hander is the British No. 2 and Watson senior believes they could make a successful pairing.

'She seems to play well with left-handers,' he said.

Watson has had massive media exposure since winning the US Junior Open at the start of last month and yesterday she was the subject of a full-page feature in the Guardian's sport section.

In an interview with award-winning journalist Donald McRae she discussed how she nearly gave up on her dream of becoming a professional player before her success at Flushing Meadows.

But according to her father, she is not happy that McRae has embellished a couple of comments she said about fancying US Open men's singles champion, Argentinean Juan Martin del Potro.

'You can't trust these national journalists like the local ones,' joked Watson senior.
