Watson breezes through opener

HEATHER WATSON breezed into the second round of the Eddie Herr Classic in Florida yesterday.

The US Open junior champion and tournament top seed wasted little time in beating Canada's Marianne Jodoin for the loss of just two games.

The victory sets her up for a second-round match tomorrow against the American girl Monica Turewicz.

Watson is seeded to meet Croatia's Silvia

Njiric in the final of a tournament recognised as one of the most prestigious outside the Grand Slams.

In the corresponding event in 2008 the Guernsey star reached the final before losing to Lauren Embree.

Watson is one of just two Britons playing in the Eddie Herr, the other being Jessica Ren.

The draw of 64 features most of the world's top juniors in an age-group that Watson has risen to three in the world.

The Guernsey star is also due to play in the doubles competition this week with Polish girl Magda Linette.

They start their doubles bid on Thursday.
