HEATHER WATSON turned in one of the finest performances of her fledging career when she met world No. 33 Elena Vesnina in the first round proper of the Family Circle Cup in Charleston, South Carolina, yesterday.

The 2009 US Junior Open champion took the 23-year-old Russian, who was No. 22 in the world last October and has career prizemoney of $1,763,769, to a tie-break in the first set before narrowly being beaten.

The 17-year-old Sarnian, who is ranked No. 416 in the world and has career winnings of $15,983, was by no means outclassed.

Vesnina had taken a set off world No. 2 Caroline Wozniacki in the WTA Ponte Vedra Beach event at the weekend, but Watson started the match off with an ace and she served another ace in the opening game to take a 1-0 lead in the first set.
