Watson sinks Serb

HEATHER WATSON shrugged off a stomach strain to earn herself a place in the main draw at Eastbourne yesterday.

She now plays fellow qualifier, the world No. 50 from Canada, Aleksandra Wozniak, for a place in the last 16 at the AEGON International and a likely meeting with the world No. 8, Poland's Agnieszka Radwanska.

A sideline of the 6-1, 1-6, 6-1 win over Serbian Bojana Jovanovski was that it bumped the Guernsey girl 20 places up the world rankings into the 320s. Another win today will provide the US Junior Open champion with a further 50 points which would bounce her dozens of places up the WTA ranking list, perhaps as high as the 260s.
