Watson's ever-rich pickings

IT IS not exactly 'Who Wants To be Millionaire', but winning at Eastbourne, which Heather Watson, pictured, did for the fourth day in succession yesterday, virtually doubles the bank balance per round.

In causing another major shock at the AEGON International, defeating world No. 48 Aleksandra Wozniak, from Canada, Watson doubled her winnings from the WTA Tour event at Devonshire Park.

Guaranteed $4,000 by reaching the first round proper, the 18-year-old made a nonsense of the ranking list to wallop Wozniak 6-3, 6-2 and earn herself an additional $4,000 in reaching the last 16 where she now plays the world No. 11, Victoria Azarenka, from Belarus, who has been ranked as high as six.

Yesterday's comfortable win over Wozniak must rank as the best win yet of Watson's career, as was the case on the previous two days at the final big warm-up event for Wimbledon fortnight, which follows this event on the seaside.

'I'm so, so happy,' said Watson, the world number 344.
