IAN POWELL stripped more than a third of a second off his own island long-course record in winning the 100m backstroke final at the Manchester Open Meet.

IAN POWELL (pictured) was unable to replicate his Commonwealth Games entering time after reaching the semi-finals of the 100m butterfly.

Powell's qualifying time from the earlier heats was 55.04, but he managed only 55.24 in the afternoon, therefore not making the final.

Swimming team manager Sara Parfit said Ian was understandably disappointed but was determined to bounce back in the rest of the Games.

'It's such a shame it didn't happen for him because his PB that he entered to qualify for the Games would have got him through to the final easily,' said Parfit.
