Dark horse Powell

IAN POWELL might be a dark horse for the Great Britain team for the World Championships should he excel at the Nationals next week.

The Guernseyman (pictured), who is based in Stockport, will be competing in the 100 and 200m butterfly events in Manchester at the British Gas Championships and revealed that he is in good shape going into the meet.

'It's an opportunity to race fast and against the best guys in Britain with an outside shot of making the World Championships team,' said Powell.

'Going on my best times, I'm about 1sec. away from it, so I will just go in there and give it my best. I'm not expecting to make it, but never say never.'
