ANGRY islanders have been questioning deputy-elect Peter Harwood over why he had put his name forward for the job of chief minister.

A two-hour BBC Guernsey phone-in saw people lining up to question Mr Harwood and the only currently eligible chief minister candidate, Jonathan Le Tocq.

Under the current rules deputies can stand for the role only if they have served four of the last eight years in the States.

But Mr Harwood was proposed, despite him being a first-time candidate for the States. The States Assembly and Constitution Committee has now proposed the four-year rule is removed.

Many callers were critical of the proposed change, with one describing the entire process as a debacle.
