Peter Harwood is Guernsey's new chief minister.

His election followed a day spent discussing a change to the rules to allow a member to be nominated who has not been in the States for four out of the last eight years, and an amendment from former chief minister Lyndon Trott for the election to be an open and transparent one, with named votes being taken.

After approving the amendment from Deputy Trott, members went on to approve the change to the rules of procedure. That meant anyone in the House could be nominated.

In the end, it was only Deputies Peter Harwood and Jonathan Le Tocq whose names were put forward.

Deputy Harwood won the vote by 27 votes to 20.

The States will meet next week to elect ministers and members in each department.
