FLYBE staff have demanded assurances that communities will not suffer as a result of job cuts across Guernsey, Jersey, the Isle of Man and Scotland.

The airline will cease to use Guernsey as a base from the end of March as part of a group-wide slimming down that will see it shed 500 jobs.

Unite yesterday joined calls for clarity about how the cuts will affect services.

Regional officer for the south west, Rob Miguel, said the union would be 'looking very carefully at the operational model Flybe has put forward'.

'The union will be putting pressure on the company and the regional governments to explain what action will be taken to maintain these essential links for the communities affected and to protect as many jobs as possible.

'These routes are not only essential for local businesses and the economy but they matter to the life of these communities.'

Flybe was not immediately available to comment.
