Condor Ferries is close to securing the new agreement for the Channel Islands, which it has said it needs before investing £50m. in a new vessel.

Guernsey's External Transport Group, which is part of the negotiating team, has approved the proposed joint policy statement and the Channel Islands deal could be signed off in the coming weeks.

Public Services minister Paul Luxon, who chairs the External Transport Group, said Condor's commitment to investing in a new high-speed vessel was a significant factor.

'Condor Ferries is contemplating an investment in the order of £50m. in a new state-of-the-art high-speed craft to service the routes to and from the UK,' he said.

'That has been a significant factor in the authorities in each island considering the early revision and extension of the policy.'
