College of FE axes media studies course
A MEDIA studies course at the College of FE has been permanently axed, it has been revealed.
Former acting principal Steve Dudley told the Guernsey Press last September that the creative media production level 3 course would not run during 2013/2014 due to insufficient applicants.
But Education has now said that the department, board and college decided at the time to scrap the course for 2014/2015 and subsequent years. It is unclear what effect the move has had on staff, as Education did not respond to a question about potential redundancies.
The department denied claims, however, that the media unit at the college was shutting down.
'The college has also consulted with industry locally and universities in the UK with regards to the value of the level 3 media production course – the outcome of this sector engagement is that employers are seeking "multi-skilled" professionals to work in all areas of the creative sector.
'The college continues to offer level 3 art and design and this curriculum has now evolved to ensure that those learners have experience with creative and media technologies as well as the full range of other artistic mediums.
'Students who meet level 3 entry criteria now have the opportunity to apply for the level 3 art and design course at the college or to apply for a relevant programme of study at the Grammar Sixth Form Centre.'
