High fees turn local students away from Cambridge
CAMBRIDGE UNIVERSITY'S fee hike has seen a sharp drop in the number of students applying to get places there, figures released by the Education Department show.
In the wake of the decision by the university to class students from the island as being from 'overseas', no Guernsey student has applied for a grant to study there this academic year. Last year four did, in 2013 it was three.
An Education Department spokeswoman said it was concerned at the drop and frustrated with how the university has decided to classify students.
Former Cambridge student and current Elizabeth College principal George Hartley, pictured, said the decision was already having an impact.
'It has reflected in how many apply. This year, 10 of our students applied for Oxford and only two to Cambridge. But the shame is the fact some would have applied to Cambridge had it not been for the fees.'
