Parents want one-way system trialled at St Martin's School

A ONE-WAY system could be trialled by St Martin's School this autumn.

But the Environment Department is not in favour of the idea.

The system has been drawn up by parents who are worried about the safety of the nearly 600 students who will attend the school from September.

If the Environment Department supports the idea, Route des Coutures would become one-way from Burnt Lane to Grande Rue between 8.15am and 9am in the morning. During that time westbound traffic would be diverted around Rue Maze and Burnt Lane.

The school's Active Travel Group has introduced a number of changes – such as cycle trains and walking buses – but group spokeswoman Vanessa Crispini-Adams, pictured, said the amount of traffic outside the school and the lack of pavements was putting pupils at risk.

With St Andrew's School closing at the end of this term, more pupils will be going to the school. 'There's no pavement and there's two-way traffic on the narrow road,' she said. 'It does not comply with any standards. It is a historic situation, which is untenable.'

'We anticipate it could add up to five minutes to a journey, but we will not know until it's tried.'
