One islander confined herself to her cabin and was unable to eat for the entire 11-hour journey, while her husband told of people stumbling over, as the vessel made its way through the English Channel from Portsmouth to Guernsey.

The situation worsened around 2pm, when a ventilation cowl on the forward deck was damaged in the heavy weather, and the ship had to change direction to enable the crew to safely make repairs.

The Clipped arrived in Jersey at 1am, but due to international regulations relating to crew hours of rest, she will have to remain in the island until 7.05pm today when she is scheduled to depart northbound to Guernsey and Portsmouth.

The service was originally scheduled to be operated by Condor Liberation, which was recently damaged in Poole.
