Amy Blue trawler will be hit by quota controls
FISHERMEN who are trying to make a living out of their catches are going to be most affected by new quota controls, the president of the Guernsey Fishermen's Association has said.
Barry Paint, pictured, was speaking after the States announced it had done a deal with the UK Department for Environment, Food & Rural Affairs (Defra) to reinstate the fisheries management agreement.
But the reinstatement has come at a cost, with the States agreeing to introduce a provision in Bailiwick fishing licences that will mean all vessels over 10 metres in length must comply with the monthly catch limits for those species that are subject to quota management controls.
While there are six vessels in the island's 150 fleet over 10 metres long, not all are catching species subject to the quotas.
Mr Paint said ray, which is one of the fish subject to quotas, was the main wet fish caught in Guernsey waters.
And for one Guernsey trawler, owned by Pierro Le Cheminant, the quotas for ray would have a significant effect.
