Cancellation could mean the end of horse racing

RACING may never return to L'Ancresse following the cancellation of today's meeting, which has cost the Race Club £25,000.

The annual meeting will not take place after trainers from the UK and Jersey, which made up 24 of the 25 confirmed runners, were unable to bring their horses over by boat because of the weather.

Trevor Gallienne, president of the Guernsey Race Club, said the meeting was not insured against a cancellation.

'It is something completely out of our control, but we are not blaming anyone. It is just one of those things. The fact is that boats have got restrictions on keeping any livestock aboard.'

Jersey-based trainer Alyson Malzard said she had spent all of Saturday trying to find out whether her five runners would be able to travel over yesterday.

'Condor said they couldn't take them as it was too rough to carry them,' she said.

Mrs Malzard said it was a real blow for the Guernsey Race Club, given the time and resources invested into this year's meeting.
