About 1,500 people were set to travel to or from the island to visit friends and loved ones for Christmas and New Year.

Around 1,000 of them were disrupted by the weather.

Aurigny’s Bristol flight was cancelled when the airport shut for a time after a BMI flight left the runway while taxiing after landing.

Colin Le Ray, ports general manager, said the morning’s flights had mostly operated as usual, but disruption began around lunchtime.

‘It is looking like about three-quarters of travellers today will be disrupted, I can see that some are being moved over to the ferry now,’ he said.

‘The forecast looks bad for the rest of the day as well.’

Aurigny said its staff were pulling out all the stops to try to get everyone where they need to be, despite the conditions.
