Celebrate with The Guernsey Weigh
THE zero waste store in the Inner Market has had a tremendous first year and the enthusiasm and support of the community for the venture has been really encouraging.
In the first year the shop has made over 106,000 individual sales. If each of the items sold had been wrapped in plastic, this would have equated to significant landfill/pollution.
TGW is keen to celebrate its anniversary with the whole island.
To thank the local community, TGW is launching an initiative to support local charities. Between 11 June and 30 June customers shopping in the store, who want to participate, can choose a local charity and TGW will donate 5% of the value of the amount spent to the chosen charity.
Alison Vine, director of TGW, said: ‘Being part of the community is key to us. We can’t save the world, but we can help preserve and protect our wonderful island. Supporting local charities, particularly after this recent difficult period, is important to our community.’
Since its launch last year, children have been very engaged with the ethos of the store and staff have visited local schools to discuss why plastic-free shopping is important.
‘We want to include our junior supporters in our birthday celebrations,’ said store manager Ben, so a colouring competition, aligned with Children’s Drawing Week, will also be launched today.
‘We are asking children up to age 11 to colour the seascape attached (also available on the website and in the shop) and bring it into the store where it will be exhibited (and copied onto our Facebook page). The competition will run to 31 July. The winners will get a prize, including £20 to be spent in store.’
At the same time, TGW is launching a competition for 12-18 year olds asking them to create something out of rubbish found on the beach. The up-cycled item could be useful or artistic. This competition will also run to 31 July. Prizes will include £20 to be spent in store.
To ensure adults are not left out, TGW is going to compile a recipe book. ‘We are asking customers to send us recipes for food, cleaning products, cosmetics or anything else made from the wonderful ingredients sold in the shop,’ said Alison. These will be compiled in a book and also put on the website.
