‘No conflict’ in prominent islanders’ election input
‘GREAT stuff and good work’ was how the president of the States’ Assembly and Constitution Committee responded to the launch of the 2020 Election Support Group.
The group comprises several eminent islanders, including former Bailiff sir Geoffrey Rowland, and was set up to encourage islanders to register, research the candidates and then vote in October’s election.
It’s focal point is a new website on which it plans to publish the candidates’ responses to a series of questions it will send them.
But, said Sacc president Neil Inder, it is intended to allow islanders to ask questions of the candidates and have their responses appear on the official election site, election2020.gg, in place of hustings.
He said having more than one site offering a similar service was a good thing.
‘I see no conflict in that and the more aggregation of content over all platforms the better,’ he said. ‘Great stuff and good work.
‘I applaud the efforts made by the Electoral Support Group.
‘It looks like a slick website and it’s run by members of the community with a not insignificant background in politics and business.
‘I’m sure it will become a useful tool for candidates and voters.’
As well as providing an online question and answer website for voters, a ‘meet the candidates’ event is being planned for Sunday 20 September.
