Pumpkin stall sells out in just over an hour

THERE was a last-minute run on pumpkins on Halloween morning, and the annual stall set up by Rotary Guernesiaise ran out in just over an hour.

This came as a surprise to head of fundraising and membership Ali Barnett, who said she and the other two members on the stall had not expected to get many customers due to the strong winds and heavy rain.

‘We did have a gazebo but because there was a bit of a wind we couldn’t put it up,’ she said.

They had 35 pumpkins to sell, and the plan was to open between 10am and 4pm to sell the fruit as well as to give youngsters the chance to carve them on the stall.

‘We’d sold them all by ten past 11,’ said Miss Barnett.

Most people did not want to hang around in the wet, so bought their pumpkin and took it home to carve: ‘There were half a dozen or so who carved them,’ she said.

Miss Barnett said she heard many say how difficult it had been to get their hands on pumpkins this year, most likely due to a shortage after the island’s biggest grower, Brooklands Farm, closed earlier this year.

The stall had sold out in previous years, she said, and would usually have gone to the nearby supermarket to buy more, but given the weather this time it was decided to call it a day after they had all gone.

Sales raised £177, which would be donated to the End Polio Now campaign.
