The equipment is the oldest piece on the site and while it has been given an overhaul, work has also started on a new item for the children to enjoy.

A roundabout is being installed which will be the first moving item in the play area.

The site is popular with children from all over the island and is maintained by the Vale parish.

‘We hope the new equipment will be popular when it’s installed,’ said senior constable Richard Leale.

On a less savoury note, he said that there had been problems with dogs in the area and has urged owners to heed the law banning them from the play area. ‘While we’re not anti-dog, the Control of Dogs Ordinance 1992 specifically bans animals from the play area,’ he said.

‘This is to protect the children and to keep the site clean and free from mess.’

An increasing number of complaints had been received about dogs there, he said, and he hoped owners would be sensible and observe the no dogs signs.

‘If we don’t see an improvement we will have to look at increasing the number of warning signs and talking to the police about enforcing the existing legislation,’ said Mr Leale.

‘That’s obviously the last thing we want so I urge everyone to help ensure that the play area we provide for all children remains safe for them to use.’

It costs the parish thousands of pounds to maintain the play area, ensuring that it complies with UK safety standards. It is usually checked by a UK inspector every year, but this has not happened this year because of the Covid pandemic.
