Wonder Woman Sophie in ‘ride around the world’ team
A MARVEL Comics-inspired effort to ride around the world saw Sophie Veron team up with 37 other people, including a Paralympian, to cycle 40,000km between them in a month.
The event was organised by the Superhero Series group, which organises mass disability sports series to encourage participants to be ‘super-active and super-connected’ by being a super hero for a month.
While in 2019 there were big events, including a triathlon, in the UK, with the pandemic, in 2020 the focus was on doing something at home.
Participants were able to set their own distance goal and each person was part of a team.
Miss Veron was in the team headed by paralympian canoeist and gold medal winner Anne Usher, who, Miss Veron said, kept in touch online and provided encouragement.
The team goal was for a collective round-the-world ride, and Miss Veron’s contribution was on her tricycle, and from 5 November to 5 December she clocked up 428km.
As well as riding her trike, she also took to the streets in a pony and trap and had someone take a video of part of her ride, which ended up being included in a Channel 4 programme about the event hosted by Clare Balding.
Miss Veron’s efforts concluded with a ride dressed in costume – Wonder Woman, appropriately.
Accompanied by friends Jess Haysom and Louise Hesse she did a five-mile ride that incorporated a stretch of the west coast.
For the triathlon in the UK in 2019, she rode her trike, walked and swam and raised funds for Shine, a charity which provides information and advice about spina bifida and hydrocephalus.
This year she decided not to ask people for money: ‘This year was about raising awareness,’ she said.
While aiming to take part in more Superhero Series events next year, Miss Veron is also hoping to join in some local triathlons, too, where they are able to accommodate her trike and her recently-acquired racing wheelchair.
n The Channel 4 four-part series, Superhero Tri, is still available to view on catch-up through All 4.
