Many are expected to take part, brave the cold and sleep in a tent in their home or garden.

Unable to meet face-to-face during lockdown, Beavers, Cubs, Scouts and Explorers have been given activities to complete from the safety of their own homes.

All follow pandemic guidelines and the initiative includes setting up a tent or a shelter to sleep in overnight (whether indoors or outdoors), cooking supper for their families, and having a camp fire over which they can toast s’mores, a popular US toasted marshmallow camp fire treat. After a good night’s sleep they can make breakfast the following morning.

Tomorrow, there will also be a virtual Zoom camp fire for all sections to take part in.

One brave young Scout participating is Jessica Ozanne, 7, from the 1st Guernsey (Victoria) Beavers, who camped out overnight on Monday with her mother, Sarah, who said it had been surprisingly cosy.

‘Quite funny that I’m now a cold weather camping veteran because I don’t usually handle the cold very well at all,’ she said.

Jessica had some top tips for her fellow Scouters if they dare to camp out in the cold during half-term.

These include keeping your sleeping bag inside to keep it warm until you go to bed, sleeping on a mat to prevent heat loss into the ground, wearing socks, and doing exercises before sleep to warm yourself up.

Guernsey Scouts, and even their leaders if they wish to take part, will be presented with a bespoke virtual camp badge upon completion of the activity.
