Alderney’s new crane stays put during storm

ALDERNEY’S new harbour crane remained in place on the quay during storms last week since moving it would have made no difference, said the island’s Harbour Authority.

The old crane had to be replaced after sustaining damage from salt spray over its years in the open, and in December last year the island’s General Services Committee said that the new crane should be moved off the quay when not in use until a new shelter can be built for it.

But a Harbour Authority spokesman said that it was decided that the crane would be safer from accidental damage if it stayed on the quay.

It could have been moved to near the recycling area but given the weather conditions it would still have been subjected to salt spray and other debris.

‘The crane was hosed free from salt on Monday,’ he said.

‘It is our intention that when the crane is not in use it will be stored at Fort Grosnez and work is under way to facilitate that.’

General Services Committee chairman Boyd Kelly said the committee had reviewed its decision about moving the crane off the quay following a site visit.
