‘Momentous occasion to make my first visit to Guernsey’
FOR singer Poppy Neame the opportunity to sing at Government House was a homecoming of sorts, even though she had never visited the island.
Miss Neame’s grandfather was Sir Philip, who was Lt-Governor of Guernsey from 1945 to 1953.
Her father, Nigel, and his twin brother Philip were born in Government House in 1946, and Miss Neame said she had heard many stories of their growing up in Guernsey.
She said she had been hoping for an opportunity to sing in the island and this seemed the perfect time. ‘This is a very momentous occasion,’ she said.
Miss Neame was also pleased to be able to visit her father and uncle’s birthplace, and hoped to be able to see more of the house during her stay.
A trained soprano, she performs a wide repertoire of songs, and she planned to give the audience at the concert a selection of classic Proms-style numbers, alongside a few songs from shows – and Sarnia Cherie.
‘I had two hours’ practice with the Guernsey Concert Band yesterday, along with Elena from Ukraine, a very beautiful accompanist,’ she said.
For those who did not have the chance to hear her on Saturday, she was due to sing yesterday afternoon at the Crown Pier during the Jubilee Seafront Sunday event.
