St Sampson’s douzaine, which declined to run an event last year, has now unanimously voted to cancel its Liberation Day plans, which had already been started, after Education, Sport & Culture announced in late February that more events would be staged in St Peter Port, based on survey results indicating that many people preferred to celebrate Liberation Day in Town.

A St Sampson’s statement said some of the concessions that had been booked for St Sampson’s event had been withdrawn after this media release.

‘With the extra events also put on by St Peter Port douzaine, it is expected that many more people will attend Town to celebrate our special day,’ said a parish spokesman.

‘We are confident it will be a success.’

The other parishes not putting on a separate event are Torteval, which is concentrating on the Coronation, and St Saviour’s, which is not holding its usual tea party as the Liberation vehicle cavalcade is not passing through the parish.

Outside of St Peter Port, four parishes are holding family fun days – Castel, St Martin’s, St Peter’s and Forest – while Vale and St Andrew’s are concentrating on events for older residents.

St Martin’s douzenier Charlotte Le Tissier said its event, being held on the field opposite the community hall, would be very similar to last year’s.

‘There will be live music, a hog roast and family games,’ she said.

‘Everything you can think of for Liberation Day fun, with a nod to the Coronation with a children’s decorate the crown competition.’

Forest will start its celebrations at noon in the Mallard field, where there will be music, food, fun, bouncy castles and a hog roast.

St Peter’s celebrations at L’Eree go on all day from 11am to 9.45pm.

As well as watching the cavalcade go past at 1.25pm, there will be music, an old bicycle parade led by La Hougette Primary School, and a range of activities including bouncy castles and a climbing wall.

Beach activities include a sandcastle competition and a tug of war.

The cavalcade passes the Castel celebrations at Vazon opposite the Martello tower at 1.40pm. The event is on between noon and 3pm, where there will be a bouncy castle, livestock, food and a variety of stalls.

Vale parish is holding a tea party for older residents at the Douzaine Room by invitation only.

St Andrew’s is hosting a Liberation Day light lunch with live music for the parish’s older generation. The event, between 11am to 1pm, is being held in a marquee at the Last Post.

A light sandwich lunch, with cake accompanied by tea and coffee, will be provided courtesy of the parish.

More family-friendly events are planned for the afternoon.

St Andrew’s asks that as spaces for the light lunch are limited, anyone interested should email on standrewsconstables@cwgsy.net or phone 237493, giving their name/s, postcode, and contact details.
