Skips will return to green waste site as part of plans for move
SKIPS being trialled for green waste at Chouet have disappeared recently – but they will be back soon.
‘They haven’t been in operation for the last few weeks because the vehicle we use to transport them is being used to move materials between other sites,’ said Guernsey Waste operations manager Sarah Robinson.
The development of a new quarry at Chouet is causing the green waste site to move to Mont Cuet this summer.
Mrs Robinson said the skips would return to use before long as officials continue to study different options ahead of relocation to Mont Cuet.
The site previously provided an open drop-off area only and the introduction of skips has not gone down well with all users of the site.
Mrs Robinson asked users to bear with the bins once they return for the rest of their trial period.
‘We encourage anyone who is able to use the bins to do so, so we can better understand how they work in operation,’ she said.
‘We are aware that some customers may struggle to empty their green waste into the skips.
‘For anyone who is unable to use the skips, an open drop-off area is still available ...which is something that we are bearing in mind with the design of the new site.’
The States recently invited expressions of interest to trial a household collection scheme for garden waste for three months this summer.
There will be less space for green waste at Mont Cuet than there is at Chouet. And use of the headland will increase to up to 7,000 vehicles a month with the development of the quarry, which means alternative or additional services will be needed to process green waste and prevent congestion.
