Self-employed graphic designer Chloe Sarre, 25, designed the medals back in 2019 as part of a competition, and four years later she has finally seen her creation.

‘This is my first time seeing the finished version. I’m really impressed with it and I think the athletes will be as well,’ she said.

‘I designed everything, including the holes inside the material, and it has 24 segments representing the 24 islands in the Games, and they meet at the outline of the island which shows their journey coming to Guernsey.’

The other side of the medal consists of an engraving of the Games’ tagline, Inspiring Islanders.

Miss Sarre said that upon entering the competition alongside more than 70 other islanders, she was confident and happy with her design, but had no idea if she would win.

The design had to be amended when the 2021 Island Games were cancelled due to Covid.

The medals come with a box, which is shaped like a pebble and made to look similar to Guernsey granite, and each medal is accompanied with a pin badge, something that other host islands do not typically provide.

Miss Sarre has friends competing in some of the cycling events, and hopes to see them wearing her design on the podium.

Most sports will have medal presentations on location, but events such as shooting and archery will have their medal ceremonies at Beau Sejour to allow more space and for people to attend.

‘Athletes who win these medals will probably treasure them forever. They are beautiful and I cannot wait to see them being presented at

the medal ceremonies,’ said Games director Julia Bowditch.

‘Chloe’s design spoke to the underlying ethos of the Games which is about friendliness and bringing people together. They certainly add an extra sparkle to our preparations.’

Miss Sarre will receive her own commemorative set of medals, and said she will be watching as much of the games as she can.
