A crew from civil engineering company NSP Foundations was busy clearing vegetation from the site’s rock face, with the aim of beginning a rock stabilisation programme next week.

The turning circle at the end of La Vallette has been closed and nearby parking suspended while the work is carried out.

The steps – which climb from La Vallette bathing pools up to the battery and east coast cliff path – were damaged in a landslip in March 2020.

NSP contract manager Roy Galsworthy said that the stabilisation work would involve drilling and anchoring rocks into the rock face.

He estimated that it would take two to three months to complete this section of the work.

‘I don’t know the exact number of steps we have to redo, but I would say it’s more than 100,’ he said.

He added that the entire project should take about six months to complete.
