Cruise ship passengers have a good time despite weather

'Is it always like this?' asked passengers who came ashore yesterday from the first big cruise ship visitor of the season to be greeted by rain and mist.

Despite the damp welcome, they said they still enjoyed exploring the charm of Town and various tourist attractions, and some said they would return in the future.

The Ambassador Ambition, which carries just over 1,000 passengers, sailed to Guernsey from Honfleur in the Calvados department of Normandy, arriving in the island at 7am and departing at 6pm for its next stop, Plymouth.

‘It has been a bit wet and cold, but we had a walk around Town, which was nice,’ said Katie Wilson from Birmingham.

She was travelling with Josh George, also from Birmingham, who enjoyed what St Peter Port had to offer.

‘We went to Castle Cornet, which was really nice to see,’ he said.

Kevin and Linda Clark, who were making their second visit to the island from Southend-on-Sea, liked the uniqueness and character of Town.

‘It is something quite strange really. We come from a seaside resort and, like here, they haven’t decided what it is,’ said Mr Clarke.

‘We have noticed quite a lot of new developments, but there is still an old-fashioned feel, which isn’t necessarily a bad thing.

‘It’s a shame about the weather, though. Is it like this much?’

The couple also came to the island on a cruise last summer.

‘The weather was much better then, but we came on a Sunday and it was practically closed,’ said Mrs Clarke.

‘Today, we have been on a tour around the castle, which was fascinating, and done a bit of shopping, and had pancakes with bacon and maple syrup at Crepe Maison.’

Visitors also enjoyed learning more about the island’s history.

‘Despite the weather, we have had a fabulous time,’ said Theresa Kiltley, who was visiting from her home in Leicestershire.

‘We took a tour of the castle, which was really interesting.

‘I had no idea of the hardships the people of Guernsey went through during the Occupation.'
