Bailiwick of Guernsey ID Card is relaunched
Identification cards for younger islanders to use as a cheaper form of ID for travel purposes have been relaunched by the Youth Commission.
The card had previously been supplied by Crimestoppers, but the commission has now taken up the running of them after a year-long break.
Known as the ‘Bailiwick of Guernsey ID Card’ and featuring a new design, the card has been approved by local travel companies and will be recognised for travel to other Channel Islands and areas within the UK.
It is not formally recognised for proof of identity or age, however some organisations will accept the card for these purposes. Under-18s can purchase the card for £10, while over-18s must pay £15.
Anyone wishing to purchase one can do so by picking up an application form from the Police station, or by visiting the Youth Commission website.
The application process follows similar vetting procedures to applying for a driving licence, and the commission is recommending anyone interested in purchasing one should get in touch to find out what is required.
Commission administrator John Marsh was unsure of the reasons as to why the card was discontinued, but was pleased that it was making a comeback.
‘It’s a lot cheaper than a passport and a great alternative ID for those who don’t yet have a driving licence.’
He said a lot of time had been spent on the new design, with the aim of ensuring that it came across as more professional.
‘I think before there was criticism that the card didn’t look legitimate, so we’ve focused hard on getting the look of this one right.’
There have already been dozens of enquiries about how to obtain the card, which Mr Marsh said was promising.
‘We’ve been getting between five and 10 emails a day about it, it shows that they are still popular, even after not being around for a while.’
Young islanders with cards in the old style are still able to use them, so long as the cards are within their expiry date.
