A GROUP of Herm women took part in this year's Race for Life at Foote's Lane. It is always fun to make the trip across to Guernsey for such a good cause – and a lovely, sunny day just adds to the excitement.

White House Hotel head receptionist Linda Gijbertsen was running for the second time. She ran in memory of her aunt, whom she never had the chance to meet.

Kirsten Parker George has taken part in the event five times and was joined by 10-year-old daughter Maya for the second time. They ran in memory of Maya's great-grandparents.

The three of them are avid runners and like the challenge of setting time limits for themselves.

My eight-year-old daughter Eden and I are at the other end of the spectrum. We like to walk the route, enjoy the scenery and take as long as we like. It just goes to show that the race is for everyone, no matter what your age or fitness level. This year was our fourth time at the event. We run for several family members and friends and Eden runs for a young friend of hers who has been ill her whole life with an undeveloped bowel and who was diagnosed with cancer five years ago.

We were supported by Leana Lowe from the Herm Reservations Office, who kindly waited at the athletics ground with bags and jackets.

It is always a lovely way to spend a Sunday morning for a good cause. It's just a shame it happens just once a year.

Herm now has its own real ale. Herm Island Gold is exclusive to the Mermaid Tavern.

The Mermaid sold the drink at its Real Ale Festival a few months ago and it was a great success, selling out immediately.

Produced by the Liberation Group, the ale was officially launched in the Mermaid Tavern on 13 July.

Island tenant John Singer was joined by directors Jonathan Watson, Simon George and Andrew Bailey to try out the beer, along with Mermaid manager Tom Jones.

Tom and assistant manager Craig Chappell visited chief brewers Paul Hurley and Pat Dean at the Liberation Group in Jersey to see the ale being produced.

The original batch was a little different from the finished product.

The tavern specifically wanted a golden summer ale that would be light and refreshing. The ale as it now stands is certainly very light and easy to drink. It is smooth, with a fresh, fruity taste, and beautifully light gold in colour.

It is a drink that will go well with alfresco dining on hot summer days, but also will make a lovely staple for winter.

Herm Island Gold will be on sale in the Mermaid as a permanent fixture. It is 4.2% alcohol.
