FEARS of business travellers being penalised by a lack of competition on the Gatwick route if Flybe sells its Gatwick slots have been played down.

It is widely recognised that with Aurigny and Flybe operating up to 10 flights a day between them, there is over-capacity on the route at present.

But there are fears that a Flybe withdrawal from the route would leave business travellers – the main users of the 'lifeline' service – paying more.

The Treasury and Resources Department acts as shareholder of Aurigny on behalf of the States. Minister Gavin St Pier, pictured, said that the involvement of the shareholder would be crucial.

'The objective for government is for the shareholder to be very clear what it wants from the States-owned assets. Would it screw passengers? Yes it would, if the shareholder told it to.'
