Brabham returns with a bang
ONE of motorsport’s most legendary names is back and it’s come with an incredible bang – the 700 bhp, track-only BT62 hypercar.
Brabham Automotive was revealed to the world in February this year, announcing its intentions to make the historic name known in the motoring world again. This is its first project, and it’s certainly one way to make an impact.
Powering the BT62 is a 5.4-litre naturally aspirated V8 engine built in-house that develops 700 bhp and 667 Nm of torque. The firm hasn’t revealed what that translates to in performance, but expect it to be seriously quick as it’s not just powerful but also incredibly light. It tips the scales at 972 kg – about the same as a Suzuki Swift Sport – resulting in a power-to-weight ratio of 720 bhp per tonne.
Ensuring the hypercar sticks to the ground is an advanced aerodynamic package that Brabham claims can produce more than 1,200 kg of downforce. The firm is also working with Michelin to develop racing slick tyres specifically for the BT62.
The price for all of this performance? £1,000,000. It’s also not road legal, so you’ll need to pay up for some track time to use the car.
If you’re concerned your driving skills might not be up to the task of taking the BT62 around a circuit though, fear not. Buyers will be enrolled in the Brabham driver development programme, allowing them to hone their skills with advice and training from professionals.
If you’ve not heard of Brabham, it’s worth knowing they’re a big deal in motorsport. The Formula One team achieved 35 Grand Prix victories and won two world constructor’s titles in a history spanning from 1962 to 1992.
Act fast though, as just 70 examples of the BT62 are going to be built and the order books now open. The first 35 units will feature liveries commemorating each of Brabham’s Formula One race wins.
