Unsightly ink should need planning permission

IN THE highly regulated world in which we live today, there is one area which is so far untouched. Not only is it untouched, it also overlooks a source of public revenue which should be tapped.

Whatever we wish to do to our homes has to be submitted to Environment, quite rightly, for approval so that unsightly additions do not spoil the landscape. However, there is no regulation, at the moment, requiring anyone who wishes to adorn his or her person with an indelible pigment below the skin.

Not only is this a painful process, but it can be carried out without any approval by the Planning Department, thus preventing anyone from raising an objection to an unsightly tattoo.

For instance, it is possible to display these things on any part of the body where anyone who wishes not to see these adornments has them full in the face.

Enough said, perhaps, but the next point to make is that approval should have to go through the appropriate channels.

By charging a fee, a useful contribution can be made to the island coffers.
