Let’s consider what ‘good for Guernsey’ really means
THE importance of the last two debates on the population management was almost universally recognised by deputies and commentators alike. I recall Dave Jones saying before one of them that this was the most important States debate since the war. Peter Harwood too made it clear that it would go down as a defining debate in Guernsey’s history.
It is appalling therefore that a single new department, called Economic Development, thinks it can come along and drive a coach and horses through the whole thing.
I also wonder about the whole rationale for the existence of Economic Development. They have a priority, one would think, of developing the economy, irrespective of whether or not it is good for Guernsey. So it’s not surprising that they featured heavily in Nick Mann’s recent article about joined up Government falling apart. (Inside Politics, 24 October)
The meaning of ‘good for Guernsey’ is worth looking at because it’s becoming clear to me that where some people see democracy and justice others see GDP figures.
I have no wish to see Guernsey having a booming economy in 20 years’ time if achieving that means that anyone who spent their formative years here has to be replaced.
