Household waste strategy stinks
I AM shocked at the new standing charge proposed for refuse rates and the black bag charge, also the collection of black sacks being moved to fortnightly, too. Do they not realise how many of us live in flats or bedsits with no outside storage areas? Where do they expect us to store the bags?
Not forgetting most of social housing now is flats and a lot of people living in them have young babies. Do they really think it hygienic to keep rotting nappies and suchlike around a home? Yes, you can put them in scented nappy sacks, but that just masks and does not stop the smell completely.
I can assure you that Guernsey will end up with a lot of fly-tipping, just like the UK. We do get a small problem with it now but it will escalate with this, I am convinced.
TRP is rising 10%, too, which is well above the cost of living rate. It is a shame that pensions are not going up enough to cover all this so yet again the retired are hit the hardest. They, like myself, are old school and will cut back and manage and probably do without heating or a decent meal, but why should they in this day and age? There is only so much increase in bills you can take out of a low income. It does not pay to do without and never go on holiday to own your modest home. People cannot afford to maintain their homes any more because of all these ridiculous increases and newly-created charges.
The States have wasted so much money on consultants and dithering over decisions about our waste disposal and now we will all be paying to recoup that cost.
